It was not until 2016 that Mamelodi Sundowns had put their hands on the Holy Grail of Arican club football, but since then, “The Brazilians” have emerged as one of the most powerful houses in the continent.
With a new tournament at sight in the African Football League (AFL), Mamelodi Sundowns will hope to have their fingerprints since the very first edition.
Founded in 1970, Sundowns have grown through the years till they dominated the scene in South Africa, and gradually had their voice heard across the continent.
Sundowns reached the CAF Champions League final in 2001 before losing to Egyptian giants Al Ahly. But returned to win the title 15 years later, and on the expense of another giants from Egypt in Zamalek. They also grabbed the CAF Super Cup in 2017.
Since 2016, Mamelodi Sundowns reached the CAF Champions League quarterfinals at the least in every edition but 2018. They are always considered one of the title contenders with their array of stars and breathtaking performances.
Now “The Brazilians” hope to have their names engraved on the maiden AFL trophy, a proof of what they have achieved and where they are looking forward to.
